OMG was engaged by a major machine tool manufacturer to develop a solution capable of significantly reducing processing times and related costs for multiple drilling on large steel tubes. The response was the design of a multispindle head equipped with four in-line ISO40 spindles, with a 98 mm pitch and angled at 90° to the machine spindle. The transmission was designed with a 1:2 gear ratio, a choice that allows the machine spindle to be preserved while still achieving the required 3,000 rpm output. Great attention was also paid to the system's thermal stability, a key element in ensuring the centesimal tolerances required for machining. The head body, made of solid spheroidal cast iron, also contributes to this objective, ensuring high rigidity and precision. The four spindles also feature high-pressure coolant passage through the tool center, complemented by an external cooling system with high-pressure nozzles, to ensure optimal performance throughout the entire production process. The result was tangible and measurable: thanks to this solution, the customer reduced machining times by 60%, achieving significant savings in both productivity and operating costs. This is yet another example of how OMG's custom design can transform a specific production requirement into a competitive advantage.

Angle heads are a versatile solution for a wide range of machining operations. The Digital version of the TAV30, however, stands out thanks to its highly specialized design, engineered to ensure high performance even in the most demanding applications. A key feature of this angle head is the QuadBlock® system with adjustable support pins, specifically designed to effectively withstand the axial and radial forces generated during heavy-duty machining. The result is superior stability — the core principle behind the entire system. When handling large angle heads, one of the main limitations of machine tools can be the weight of the unit. The tool changer arm may not be able to support the load of the head or may exceed the maximum allowable overturning moment. Similarly, the tool magazine may also face limitations related to overall dimensions and available space.
To meet these requirements, we design dedicated Pick-up systems, such as the one shown in the picture, allowing the machine tool to automatically deposit the angle head at the end of the machining process and retrieve it again during the next cycle. Pick-up systems can be designed for both vertical spindle and horizontal spindle machines. |
